PHILTRUM
GARETH MITCHELL
SOLD OUT
Gareth Mitchell _ laptop _ chitarra elettrica _ elettronica

Gareth Mitchell _ laptop manipulation _ electric guitar _ electronics
Philtrum is an album grown over a long period of time. The intention was to allow tracks to evolve organically, listen to their needs as they did this and to aid and abet them in fulfilling what was perceived to be their desires. Sounds are sourced primarily from one guitar, processed and reprocessed, sampled and resampled. The aim was to produce a consistency of sound, a world removed from any normal frame of reference, but logical within its own confines. Using one guitar, a very personal instrument, it was possible to develop a character reflective of ones own nature, as developed over an even longer period of time: this meant constantly being in contact with material which was, in its essence, personally cultivated before composition had even begun. Composition was very gradual. Rather than develop say, a rhythm first, a melody and then a harmony, it began with small elements of each, existing only within a small loop. Gradually, each of these strands would develop, each informing the other's progression as they moved towards conclusion. During various phases of development, parts of tracks and unfinished fragments were previewed at gigs in various European cities. The act of doing this provided another stimulus to the further development of the work. The response from a crowd, the mood of a city, or simply hearing ones work in an alien context all left their mark. The work is intended to be appreciated in terms of its overall structure (the macrocosmic) and it's detail (the microcosmic). Both are involved and usually quite unstraightforward. It is hoped that the album will yield more on each subsequent listen. Gareth Mitchell, May 2006.
