Biographies of the musicians follow.
Ove Volquartz (saxophonist and clarinettist) originally from the free improvisation (jazz) scene, as evidenced by his work with African-American musicians as well as the European avant-garde. Concert tours, festival appearances etc. have taken him all over Europe and as far as Africa. Recordings were made with, among others, the legendary Krautrock group Annexus Quam, Cecil Taylor, Gunter Hampel, Barre Phillips, Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Kowald, Abbey Rader, TAG Trio, Sabu Toyozumi, Second Exit, Reciprocal Uncles, Gianni Mimmo, Gianni Lenoci, Peer Schlechta and Udo Schindler. Recently, compositional activities have become increasingly important in Volquartz's broad musical spectrum. New focal points of his work have emerged on the one hand in his cooperation with the organist Peer Schlechta and in a completely different field with the Japanese Butoh dancer Tadashi Endo and other dancers. Another aspect of his activity results from his collaboration with visual artists, as well as in his cooperation with composers from the field of New Music, e.g. Daniel Ott or Thanos Chrysakis. In his solo playing, Volquartz goes far beyond the vocabulary of jazz music, quite naturally and organically incorporating the sound and creative possibilities of new music. Volquartz also wrote his doctoral thesis as a musicologist on the psychological foundations of improvisation.
Makoto Sato (born 1946 in Niigata, Japan) is a Japanese drummer and important figure of the contemporary improvisation scene. He is now based in Paris, where he arrived for the first time in 1970 and had the chance to attend concerts by exceptional musicians such as Sunny Murray, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Alan Silva. These experiences revealed to him the multiple possibilities of improvisation. Later he met Don Cherry, Itaru Oki and Masahiko Togashi, and these encounters encouraged him to embark on his own musical experimentation. In 1992, together with Jean-François Pauvros and Jean-Marc Foussat, he created the group Marteau Rouge. Makoto Sato has played with Joe McPhee, Alan Silva, Itaru Oki, Raymond Boni, Daunik Lazro, Thollem McDonas, Michael Marcus, Lucien Johnson, Linda Sharrock, Rasul Siddik, Kent Carter, Eric Zinman, Richard Comte, Michel Kristof and many others. He also works with dancers such as Masaki Iwana, Gyohei Zaitsu and Maki Watanabe.
Claude Parle (born 1947 in Sens) began studying accordion at the age of 10 and won Europe cup in 1964. After confronting musics and bands/musicians as diverse as Rüdiger Carl, Irène Schweizer, Hans Reichel, Han Bennink in Wuppertal, Soft Machine in Dijon, Don Cherry at the American Embassy and at Chateauvallon Festival in '72, he created with Jac Berrocal the famous Sens' Music Meeting in 1978, '80 and '83. Then he invests in a work with the Buto dance. In 2002 he was in tour in Japan and various festivals in Rome, Barcelona, Bilbao. At the same time as an acousmatic work at the GRM in Paris, he created several electronic pieces, among them Mariomania. He formed three groups: Claude Parle Large Ensemble, Dritto Dall'Inferno and Subphonic Orchestra (with Jouk Minor). Some records and recording sessions with Jac Berrocal, François Tusques, Linda Sharrock's group and Mats Gustafsson.
Yoko Miura (born in Tokyo) took classical piano lessons between the agas 5 and 18, inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Toru Takemitsu, Masahiko Togashi. She took classes taight by Masahiko Sato, Takashi Kako, and attenfed a workshop by Takashi Kosugi and took lessons from Yoshio Suzuki and also from Naruyoshi Kikuchi at Eiga Bigakko.
Since 2001, she has been involved in making music overseas as well as in her country. In Japan
